Being a manager and leader is a difficult balancing act, as the chart on the right suggests. It is easy to slip out of the sweet spots of being Purposeful, Organised, Inspirational and Effective. All too easily, one can become Heartless, Fanatical, Gullible or Chaotic. This is why well over half of UK organizations are using coaching in a formal program. Coaching can lead to important self discoveries, accelerate learning, change priorities, build skills, and change the behaviour that matters.

Organisations select coaches for three reasons, primarily:

  • To help accelerate the growth and development of promising middle managers
  • To work with senior executives who want to extend their knowledge of self, or grow in a particular dimension
  • With key people at any level, who are not meeting expectations, to develop and implement a clear path to improvement

The immediate benefits to the coachee include a clearer understanding of individual style, habits and priorities. Coachees are better able to take advantage of their strengths, and, to understand and minimize the effects of personal vulnerabilities. They also can learn to improve their interpersonal skills, and to develop broader management competencies.

These changes in the coachee make him/her more effective at work, and increase the probability that s/he will be promoted. Importantly also, they can transform the coachee's attitude toward the job: from being a drudge to an enjoyable challenge.

Why select Bill Peace as a coach?

Bill is a very experienced and successful manager as well as a coach, having over fifteen years experience as a general manager. He has transformed the performance of a large European company, and he has turned around three smaller companies as an interim managing director. He is a fellow of the Institute of Management Consultancy , and holds a diploma in Positive Impact Coaching. He has written two articles for the Harvard Business Review on leadership and management. He has co-authored two books on management and consultancy. He is an experienced NLP practitioner. As a coach and consultant, he has worked in many business sectors. His style is warm and thoughtful, but focused on results. As a sole practitioner, he has low overheads, and is able to offer value for money rates.

What is the process?

Bill will meet with the potential coachee for about an hour, with no obligation. The purposes of the meeting are to explore the coachee's goals, discuss Bill's approach, and to decide whether the personal chemistry is right.

Generally, Bill meets with a coachee for 3-4 hours every 3-4 weeks. Using the STEPPPA model keeps the agenda clear and the process on track.

STEPPPA is an acronym for:

  • Subject or scope of the coaching
  • Target objective
  • Emotional context (emotion is a fuel for change)
  • Perception of new choices
  • Plan leading to the target
  • Pace (checking the plan for realism and consequences)
  • Adapt or A ction the plan

Often, a coachee is not clear about his/her situation and issues. In this case, Bill and the coachee will agree on the use of an appropriate data gathering method, such as a works style profile.

Between face-to-face meetings, Bill is available to consult with the coachee by telephone or email.

The coach-coachee relationship may last only a few months, because the coachee feels s/he has reached his/her objective. In other cases it may continue for several years, with a reduced frequency of face-to-face meetings.

Because of the breadth of Bill's experience, he is able to offer coachee clients a range of capabilities including:

  • The PPA/HJA profiles of style at work (he is a qualified Thomas International practitioner)
  • Career values analysis
  • Emotional intelligence feedback
  • Learning styles analysis
  • Influencing style mapping (based on ILEG)
  • Decision-making style feedback (based on Vroom)
  • Tailor-made 360 o feedback

Also because of the range of Bill's experience as a coach/consultant/manager, he is able to help coachee clients explore and resolve issues relating to:

  • Communications
  • Interpersonal issues
  • Time management
  • Problem-solving
  • Follow through
  • Planning
  • Stress
  • Corporate politics
  • Presentation skills
  • Listening skills
There are Five Key Values which guide Bill is his coaching practice:
  • Growth and learning of the coachee is the immediate purpose
  • The coachee controls the agenda
  • Trust makes the relationship effective
  • Greater confidence and better performance are the results of the learning
  • Minimising a vulnerability can be as important as building a strength
